boundaries    reality checks

It’s about attraction, not promotion.

Courtney J. Burg, Writer + Mentor
December 1, 2022

Do you find yourself wanting to “promote” this boundary work? Are you noticing when others are lacking limits, or behaving in codependent ways and you just want them to STOP!? This is common— sorta feels like you have stumbled across a gold mine and you want to share the news with everyone about where it’s at!

I get it.

One of my favorite AA slogans is “attraction, not promotion.” It is easy to get excited about this stuff and want to shout it from the rooftops. But, can I let you in on a little hard truth? That just pisses people off. They want to shut down, roll their eyes, and stay away. How do I know this? Because I use to be just like them. And guess what, so were you.

People don’t want to do this work until THEY want to do it. I know you are excited. But the best way to get people on board with this stuff is by simply attracting them to it by living your own life as a result of this work.

Let them hear you set a boundary.

Show them how much more energy and peace you have now that you aren’t running yourself into the ground.

Share how you don’t have to hustle or perform to get people to like you anymore.

Reveal to them that you don’t live in guilt because you have just told someone kindly, “no.”

Allow them into your thoughts around how you no longer have to people please to earn love and how good that feels.

This is how you get them on board.

Stay encouraged, and keep doing the work for you.

They will join in when and if they are ready.
