Almost ten years ago, I began seeing a therapist. I knew I had a problem with alcohol, but I didn’t know a thing about being codependent.
He asked me a simple question. A question that required a simple answer. It was an answer I didn’t have…
“What are your plans later?”
I didn’t know. My life up until that point had revolved around everyone else I cared for. I didn’t know how to care for me. I didn’t even know what I would have for lunch that day.
Not caretaking for others took the proverbial wind from my sails. I felt like I was floating around in life. I didn’t have anything to tether myself too. I felt lost.
Until I began to heal from codependency, that is.
I had to answer these questions, and still do, as a form of maintenance today.
