Have you ever heard this story? A woman was preparing Christmas dinner, and as she pulled the ham out of the oven, her daughter asked, “mom, why are the ends cut off the ham?” Her mother shrugged and said, “I don’t know, it’s always how my mother did it.”
The daughter was confused. So when her grandmother arrived for dinner later that evening, she said “grandma, why did you always cut the ends off your ham?”
The grandmother chuckled and replied “my roasting pan was always too small to cook our ham, so I had to cut the ends to fit the pan!”
This is how “old ways” are passed down unconsciously. We see what our mothers did, and their mothers before them, and we honor their ways without actually asking WHY. We feel trapped + burdened + unaligned, yet we never stop to think, does this make sense for ME now?
Maybe it is how you are choosing to spend your holidays.
Maybe you are the first sober person in your family.
Maybe you are staying home with your children, pursuing a career that others don’t agree with, or parenting your child differently than your parents parented you.
Maybe it’s an idea, a narrative, or the way you carry yourself.
Maybe it is simply how you choose to dress or act.
Perhaps it’s how you set limits, show up for yourself + commit to advocating for what’s right, even if right is messy.
Maybe the old way was never the way for YOU after all, friends. You remained faithful, patient + loyal to those before you. You tried, but then you began questioning the ham. You started to realize that it wasn’t working for you anymore. You began to listen to that whisper inside that was (is) leading you another direction.
Now you’ve shifted, become more aware, and can no longer pretend. It’s a beautiful thing to be alive, have choices + pursue a different path. ♥️
