I was talking with a friend the other day about her struggles with panic attacks + anxiety. She was looking for some resources on rewiring her thoughts. I shared with her my favorites on neuroplasticity, but also suggested that she begin the work to re-establish safety within her body. You see, when our body is on over drive, our nervous system never learns to recover. We literally begin to live our life on high + are unable to come down. It then begins the debate of which comes first… do our thoughts trigger panic in the body? Or does the body trigger panic in our thinking?
I really believe establishing safety within the body is overlooked. We attend “talk” therapy, we force ourselves to “think happy thoughts,” yet we are still suffering inside. This is because it’s not as simple as MIND OVER MATTER. We can’t think our way into safety. It’s nearly impossible to tell ourselves “I’m safe” when our palms are sweating, our hearts are pounding, our vision is blurred. I know because I’ve been there. This is why I advocate for rebuilding trust + safety within our mind AND our body.
