I have a gf who openly discusses the problems in her household on social media. She will share about a fight she and her husband had. She will discuss how annoyed she gets with her children’s lack of tidiness or the mishap they are causing at home. She will vent about how annoyed she gets with extended family; like the way her mother in law speaks to her or how her sister acts when they spend time together.
One day as we were enjoying coffee, I was on the receiving end of these comments too. Until I asked her directly…
“Have you talked to them about it all?”
She looked at me in disbelief. It was as if the idea had never crossed her mind.
No wonder the problem persisted. She was in fact, a part of the problem.
She had yet to confront the issue head on.
I like to remind my DYW members to go hard on the issue and easy on the person.
Friendly reminder:
- Social media isn’t your therapist, friend, or confidant.
- Be careful not to fall into the habitual trap of sharing with social media what you are not directly addressing in real life.
