Being “nice” doesn’t mean:

I limit saying the word “nice.” As a mama to three girls, I hear it used a lot.

“Be nice! Use nice hands! Nice girls share!”

Did you know that the Greek root word of “nice” from the 13 century is foolish, ignorant and senseless?

I don’t want my girls being THAT kind of nice.

I want them to be bold. Kind. Confident. I want them to have an opinion, to get comfortable with being unliked. I want them to speak up, to care, to have a voice. I want them to know that there is space for their needs to be met, and others too. That abandonment of self means abandonment of others, in essence. That the goal isn’t to smile through their tears, because sometimes holding it all together means letting it all fall apart.

Being “nice” in today’s society isn’t very nice at all. What would you add?
